ABG's Flashcards
What is C02 controlled by?
The lungs
What is HC03 controlled by?
The Kidneys
How do the lungs control CO2?
Breathe out CO2. The less we breathe out the more CO2 is retained and it makes the body more acidic.
How do the kidneys control HCO3?
The kidneys control Hydrogen ions (acid) and HCO3 (bicarb). They can excrete acid & retain HC03 or vice versa.
What causes Respiratory Acidosis?
Not breathing out enough CO2. (Hypoventilating)
what will a patient in Respiratory Acidosis look like? Name 4 reasons *Think Hypoventilating
Confused
Lethargic
Pale/cyanotic skin
Dyspnea
Name 6 causes of respiratory acidosis.
1) Sed / Opiods
2) Airway Obstruction
3) Lung Disease
4) Stroke
5) COPD
6) Pneumonia
How would you treat a patient in respiratory acidosis? Name 2 reasons
1) Give 02
2) mechanical ventilation
What causes Respiratory alkalosis?
Hyperventilation. The lungs are getting rid of CO2.
Name 4 causes of respiratory alkalosis.
1) Panic Attack
2) Shock
3) High Altitudes
4) Pulmonary embolism
What will the patient in respiratory alkalosis look like?
1) SOB
2) Dizzy
3) H/F numb
4) Chest Pain
What is Metabolic Acidosis?
HCO3 level has decreased.
Why are patients in DKA in metabolic acidosis?
Because Ketones are acidic
Name 3 causes of metabolic acidosis.
1)DKA
2)Starvation - cell breakdown
3)Diarrhea - HCO3 is excreted
What symptoms will a patient in Metabolic acidosis have?
1) Kussmaul Resp
2) Fruity Breathe
3) Tachycardia
4) Dysrhythmia
