A&P Integumentary Terms Flashcards
Sweat glands; may be eccrine or apocrine
Sudoriferous glands
Receptors in the skin that detect temperature and pain
Free nerve endings
Most common type of sweat glands; ducts carry sweat to pores on the skin surface
Eccrine sweat glands
Skin excretion composed of urea, uric acid, ammonia, and lactic acid
Sweat
Membranes that line the fibrous capsules surrounding joints, burase, and tendon sheaths; secrete lubricating fluid
Synovial membranes
Oil produced by sebaceous glands; skin and hair lubricant and contains anti-bacterial substances
Sebum
Deep layer of the skin composed of the papillary and reticular layers
Dermis
Superficial skin layer composed of stratified squamous epithelium
Epidermis
Touch receptors
Meissner’s corpuscles
A fibrous glycoprotein in the dermis that provides elasticity
Elastin
Sheets of hardened keratinocytes that reinforce and protect the distal ends of fingers and toes
Nails
Deep to the dermis; holds skin to underlying tissue and stores fat
Hypodermis
Serous membrane layer that lines the inside wall of the cavity
Parietal layer
Cells that make up of 90% of the epidermis; produce and store the protein keratin
Keratinocytes
Tightly packed keratinocytes that grow from the root in a hair follicle; protect the skin from UV radiation
Hair
