How is lyme disease acquired?
From the saliva of hard ticks
What is the pathogenesis of lyme disease?
Nontoxigenic but little else is known
What is the incubation period of lyme disease?
3-30 days
What time of the year is the highest incidence of lyme disease?
May-August
What are the symptoms of stage 1 of lyme disease?
Erythema migrans rash
Mild systemic symptoms
What are the symptoms of stage 2 of lyme disease?
Headache, fever, conjuctivitis and myalgia
Facial nerve paralysis and meningitis
Heart block
How is lyme disease diagnosed?
No tests required if rash present and history of tick bite
What lab tests can be done in lyme disease?
Serology on serum or CSF
PCR on joint fluid or tissue
How is early lyme disease treated?
PO amoxicillin or doxycycline for up to 4 weeks
How is neuroborreliosis treated?
IV ceftriaxone for 2-4 weeks
How is lyme disease prevented?
Protective clothing
Tick repellant
Remove ticks
