Vaccination (P1) Flashcards
Why aren’t you given the whole pathogen?
Because it could have negative effects, however it gives enough so the body will stop it later
Vaccines
Vaccines use dead, live attenuated (weak) or recombinant (many given together in one bacteria)
Adjuvants
Used to enhance the potency of the vaccine p. Substances such as egg proteins, formaldehyde, aluminium and antibiotics are used
Herd immunity
Where enough of a population are vaccinated to stop the pathogen from spreading anymore
How do vaccinations make a person immune to a disease
Give you a dead/weaker part of the pathogen
Your body produces the antibodies
When you get it your body knows most of the antibodies required to stop the real disease
Creates antibodies much quicker
How does this help for the future?
Memory lymphocytes will remember the antibodies required
