- kill or prevent the growth of bacterial cells
- interfere with the production of bacterial cell wall
- toxic to human cells so can only be used at a therapeutic dose
- only work on bacteria out of human cells
- no effect on symptoms

- reduce the pain or discomfort
- interrupt signals between the site, the spinal cord, or the brain
- based on aspirin and opiates
- no effect on the cause of the pain
- can be highly addictive
