Enzymes (P1) Flashcards
Amylase
Produced in pancreas, small intestine lining, salivary glands
Functions in mouth and small intestine
Starch - glucose
Protease
Produced in pancreas, small intestine, stomach
Functions in stomach and small intestine
Protein into amino acids
Lipase
Produced in lining of small intestine and pancreas
Functions in small intestine
Lipids - fatty acids AND GLYCEROL
Why do enzymes only work with one substrate
Because they have a hole which only that substance fits into
Where is bile produced and stored?
Liver
Gall bladder
Protein breakdown
Broken down
Enters the bloodstream
Reordered in the body
Bile
Helps to speed up the breakdown of lipids, decreases volume, increases surface area
Alkaline, neutralises stomach acids, small intestine is alkaline
