Natural Selection/ Selective Breeding Flashcards
1
Q
Why do animals have features
A
Survival
Mates (e.g. tails on a male peacock)
2
Q
Steps to natural selection
A
- Random mutation causes variation
- Variation gives some a survival advantage
- They outcompete others more likely to have more offspring that are healthier and more likely to survive
- Mutation/characteristic is passed on to offspring
3
Q
Why selective breed?
A
- increases chance of desired phenotypes
- actively decide the characteristics that you want
4
Q
Selective breeding disadvantages
A
- increasing the risk of masked alleles to cone together
- reduces variation (more prone to disease)
