Specialised cells (P1) Flashcards
What is the function of a nerve cell?
To carry nerve impulses
Give an adaptation of a nerve cell
Myelin sheath- insulation, increases speed
Axon- where impulses are transferred
What is the function of a sperm cell?
To fertilise egg cells
Give an adaptation of a sperm cell
Tail- movement to the egg, energy from mitochondria
Acrosome- break down the ovary
What is the function of a muscle cell?
Move the bones of the skeleton
Give an adaptation of a muscle cell
Mitochondria- transfer energy for chemical reactions
What is the function of a root hair cell?
To absorb water and minerals
Give an adaptation of a root hair cell
Lots of mitochondria- lots of energy
Hairs- High surface area
What is the function of a photosynthetic cell?
Where photosynthesis occurs
Give an adaptation of a photosynthetic cell?
Large surface area and on the surface, absorbs more sunlight
What is the function of a xylem cell?
It carries water and dissolves minerals from the leaves
Give an adaptation of a xylem cell?
Dead so it has a hollow inside
Only the cell wall is alive
Nothing in the way of the water
What is the function of a phloem cell?
It carries food made by photosynthesis
Give an adaptation of a phloem cell
Sieve plates- allow more food through
Companion cells- support each other symbiotic relationship
