Types Of Reproduction Flashcards
Sexual reproduction
Two parents
Combinations of gametes from both parents’ genomes
Offspring not genetically identical to parents
Asexual reproduction
One parent
No gametes and DNA mixing
Offspring genetically identical to parents
Sexual (+ and -)
+ leads to variation to survive disease/predators
- risk of STI
- could develop illnesses
- takes time/effort, risk of not finding
Asexual (+ and -)
+ less risk involved
+ continue a genetic line without a partner
- no variation
- diseases passed genetically
What does meiosis do?
Produce gametes
Meiosis steps
- Divides its genetic material- two armed chromosomes
- The chromosomes line up in the middle
- They are pulled apart so each has some of the fathers and some of the mothers
- They line up and get pulled apart again- leaves 4 gametes with one set of chromosomes
Malaria
Reproduces sexually in mosquito and asexually in human host
Fungi reproduction
Fungi release spores which can become new fungi when they land in a suitable place
Strawberry/daffodil
Strawberry- runners (stems which grow on the surface away from the plant, more grow on it)
Daffodils- bulbs, divide off from the main bulb, each forms an identical plant
