Osmosis results + RP (P1) Flashcards
What happens when you put a plant cell in a hypotonic solution?
The cell expands because it has absorbed water, it becomes turgid
What happens when you put a planet cell in an isotonic solution?
The cell stays the same
What happens when you put a plant cell in a hypertonic solution?
It becomes flaccid because water leaves the cell
What happens when you put an animal cell in a hypotonic solution?
Some of the cells could burst which could be a cause of death
What happens when you put an animal cell in an isotonic solution?
It stays the same because no water has entered or exited the cells
What happens when you put an animal cell in a hypertonic solution?
Some of the cells could shrivel up and it could be a cause of death
RP method
- Use a potato corer to make cylinders of potato and cut to equal lengths
- Measure the mass of each
- Add it to 10cm3 different concentrations of solution 1 1mol 1 0.5mol and one pure water
- Leave it overnight
- Work out the percentage change of mass
