- you keep your vein
- it can only be done 4 times

Replacing a diseased heart with a healthy one
- you have a fully capable heart
- there is a risk with surgery, you need a machine to pump your heart
How is our heart rate controlled, which can be replaced with artificial ones if it stops working
Pacemaker cells in the right atrium
Coronary heart disease
When the blood supply to part of the wall of the heart is completely blocked
Faulty heart valves
Can be damaged or weakened infection, old age, Heart attacks
May stiffen so they can’t properly open
May be leaky so blood flows both ways
Can replace with one from other mammals or man made
Artificial heart advantages and disadvantages
+ less likely to be rejected by immune system
- not as good as living ones
- could wear out or have motor fail
- needs drugs to thin blood
