Urinary System Flashcards
Function of the Kidneys
- Removal of nitrogenous waste and over abundant substances from blood
- Form and excretes urine
- Regulation of water, electrolyte and acid/base balance of the body
- Secrete hormones that stimulate the production of blood cells and regulate blood pressure
Kidney Structure
Bean shaped structure that function as a filter for blood
Kidney location
Lie on either side of vertebral column on the posterior wall of the abdominal cavity, retroperitoneal
Renal Hilum Structure
Hollow indentation on the medial side of the kidney
Renal Hilum Function
Opens to blood vessels, nerves, lymphatic vessels, and the ureters
Renal Pelvis
Occupies the renal sinus (cavity) inside the renal hilum (hilus); gives rise to kidney tubules
Regions of the kidney
Renal Medulla
Renal Cortex
Renal Medulla
Inner portion of kidneys
Renal Cortex
Outer portion (contains most of the nephrons)
Renal Arteries
Branch form abdominal Aorta, supply blood to kidneys
Afferent arterioles
(to the organ)
Smallest of the renal artery that supply blood to nephrons
Efferent arterioles
(Away form the organ)
Smallest of the renal artery branches that collects filtered blood from the nephron
Renal Veins
Join with Inferior Vena Cava and take filtered/deoxygenated blood back to the heart
Nephron
Basic functional unit of kidney’s (filter blood/create urine)
1 million per kidney
