Digestive System : Functions and Structures (part 3) Flashcards
Jejunum Structure
The longest middle section of the small intestine
Jejunum Function
Absorption of nutrients into blood
Intestinal Vili
Tiny projections of the intestinal wall that increase the surface area and provide the connection with capillaries for nutrients to be absorbed into the blood
Ileum Structure
Terminal end of small intestine that provides connection to large intestine via the ileoceccal sphincter
Ileum Function
Transports “leftover” waste to large intestine
Large intestine Function
Reabsorb water and electrolytes from waste with no “digestive” function
Structures of the Large Intestine
Cecum Vermiform Appendix Ascending colon Transverse colon Descending colon Sigmoid colon
Cecum Structure
Attached to ileoceccal sphincter
Vermiform Appendix Structure
Lymphatic structure off of the cecum
The segments of the colon
Ascending colon
Transverse colon
Descending colon
Sigmoid colon
Ascending Colon Structure
Right side - Begins at ceacum and travels up to liver
Transverse Colon Structure
Extends along abdomen horizontally
Descending Colon Structure
(left side) travels down to the pelvic region
Sigmoid Colon
S shaped curve that connects with rectum
Rectum Structure
Follows the curvature of the sacrum
