Metoprolol – more selective beta 1
Propanolol – non-selective – blocks beta 1 and beta 2
(lungs)
Action
Blocks the adrenergic affect, which lowers blood
pressure and heart rate
Uses
Hypertension
Also used as an anti-dysrhythmic and anti-angina
Can be used as dual therapy along with a diuretic for
African Americans

side effects metoprolol
Fatigue, dizziness, dysgeusia, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, insomnia, nightmares, drowsiness, headache, blurred vision, rash, pruritus, peripheral edema, tinnitus, erectile dysfunction, depression
adverse effects
Bradycardia, hypotension,
palpitations, stroke, thrombocytopenia, diabetes mellitus
Life-threatening:
Dysrhythmias, bronchospasm, agranulocytosis, HF
