types of data-research methods Flashcards
qualitative data
expressed in words and may take form of written description of the thoughts feelings and opinions of pps
concerned with interpretation fo language
quantiative data
expressed numerically
open to being analysed statistically and can be easily converted into graphs
primary data
original data that has been collected specifically for the purpose of the investigation by the researcher
dtaa arrives first hand from pps themselves
gathered by conducting experiment questionnaire interview or observation classed as primary data
secondary data
collected by someone other than the perosn who is conducting research
data alredy exists before psychologist begins their research
qualitative data eval
+more richness of detail than quantiative data, more broader in scope and gives pps opportunity to more fully report their thoughts feelings and opinions on given subject
+ greater external validity, more meaningful insight into pps worldview
-difficult to analyse, tends not to lend itself to being summarised statistically so that pattenrs and comparisons within and betwen data hard to identify
-conclusions rely on subjective interpretations on researher subject to bias
quantitative data eval
+simple to analyse therefore comparisons can be easily drawn
+ tends to be more objective and less open to bias
-narrower in meaning and detail than qualitative data
-fail to represent real life
primary data eval
+fits the job, authentic data obtained from pps themselves for purpose f particular investigation
+ can be designed in a way that they specifically target info that the researcher requires
-requires time and effort on the part of the researcher
-requires considerable planning prep and resources
secondary data eval
+inexpensive and easily accessed requiring minimal effort
-substantial variation in quality and accuracy may be outdated or incomplete
- may not match researchers needs or objectives challenge validity of any conclusions
