what are behavioural characteristics of ocd

A

compulsions are repetitive- feel compelled to repeat behaviour, handwashing counting praying tidying etc
compulsions reduce anxiety- performed in attempt to manage anxiety produced by obsessions, compulsive handwashing carried out response to obessive fear of germs
avoidance- attempt to reduce anxiety keeping away situations that trigger it, wash compulsively may avoid coming into contact with germs, can lead people to avoid ordinary situations and can interfere with leading regular life

what are emotional characteristics of ocd

A

anxiety and distress- unpleasant emotional experience, obsessive thoughs unpleasant and frightening and anxiety goes with these can be overwhelming, urge to repeat behaviour creates anxiety
accompanying depression- anxiety accompanied by low mood and lack of enjoyment in activities, compulsive behavoour tends to bring relief from anxiety but temporary
guilty and disgust- irrational guilty over minor moral issues or disgust may be directed against something external or at self

what are cognitive characteristics of ocd

A

obsessive thoughts- 90% with ocd is obsessive thoughts, thgouhts recur over and over again, always unpleasant, worries of being contaminated by dirt and gersm
cognitive coping strategies- deal with obsessions, religious person tormented by obsessive guilt respnd by praying or meditating, help manage anxiety but make person appear abnormal to others and can distract them from everyday tasks
insight into excessive anxiety- aware obsessions and compulsions not rational, necessary for diagnosis, experience catastrophic thoughts about worst case scenarios might result if anxierties justified, tend to be hypervigilant maintain constant alertness and keep attention focused on potential harzards
