Q

what is the working memory mdoel

A

baddeley and hitch
explanation of how one aspect of memory organised how it functions
concerned with mental space that is active when we are temporarily storing and manipulating info

Q

what is the central executive

A

supervisory role
monitors incoming data
focuses and divides limited attention and allocate subsystems to tasks
limited processing capacity
does not store info

Q

what is the phonological loop

A

deals with auditory info
preserves the order in whcich info arrives
subdivided into phonological store (stores words you hear) and articulatory process (allows maintenance rehearsal, capacity is believed to be 2secs worth of what you can say

Q

what is visuo spatial sketchpad

A

stores visual and or spatial info when required
limited capacity- three or four objects- baddeley
logie subdivided into visual cache (stores visual data) and inner scribe (records arrangement of objects in visual field)

Q

what is episodic buffer

A

temporary store for info
integraes visual spatial and verbal info processed by other stores and maintaing sense of time sequencing- records events that are happening
storage component of central executive
limited capcity of four chunks- baddeley
links working memory to long term memory and wider cognitive processes such as perception

Q

what is clinical evidence (eval)

A

shallice and warrington-kf support
kf had poor stm ability for auditory info but could process visual info normally
immediate recall of letters and digits better when read them compared to when they were read to him
kfs phonological loop was damaged by visuospatial sketchpad was intact
strongly supports existence of separate visual and acoustic memory stores

unclear whether kf had other cognitive impairments
might have affected performance on memory tasks
trauma involved maty have affected cognitive performance quite apart from any brain injury
challenges evidence that comes from clinical studies of people with brain injuries that might have affected many different systems

Q

what is dual task performance (eval)

A

stuies of dual task performance support separate existance of visuo spatial sketchpad
baddeley pps carried out visual and verbal task at same time their performance on each was similar to when they carried out tasks separately
when both tasks visual performance declined
both visual tasks compete for same subsystem whereas there is no competition when performing verbal and visual together
shows there msut be seperate subsystem that processes visual input

Q

what is the nature of the central executive (eval)

A

lack of clarity over nature of central executive
baddeley-recognise- most important least understood
ce needs to be more clearly specified than just simply being attention
some psychologists believe ce may consist of separate subcomponents
ce unsatisfactory component an this callenges integrity of wmm
