followed group of 165 romanian orphans for years as part of english and romanian adoptee study
orphans adopted by families in uk
aim of era has been to investigate the extent good care would make up for poor early experiences in institutions
pysical cognitive and emotional development assessed at 4,6,11,15 and 22-25
group 52 children from uk adopted around the same time served as control group
when children first arrived in uk half adoptees showed signs of delayed intellectual development and majority severely undernourished
11-adopted children showed differential rates of recovery that were related to their age compared with 86 for those adopted between 6mths and 2yrs and 77 for those adopted after 2yrs
differences remained for age 16
adhd more common in 15-22-25yrs
appeared to be differene in outcome related to whether adoption took place before or after 6mths
adopted after 6mths showed signs disinhibited attachment- attention seeking clinginess social behaviour directed towards all adults both familiar and unfamiliar
children adopted before 6mths rarely displayed this

carers asked about unusual social behavior (disinhibited attachment signs)
74% control classed securely attached
19% institutional group securely attached
44% institutional group disinhibited attachment
20% control disinhibited attachment
effects of institutionalisation
disinhibited attachment- spent early lives in institution show signs of this, unusual behaviour, rutter explained as adaptation to living with multiple caregivers during sensitive period for attachment formation, childrne may have 50 carers but doesnt spend enough time with any of them to be able to form secure attachment
intellectual disability- rutters study- children showed signs of intellectual disability when arrived in uk, most adopted before 6mths caught up with control group by 4, damage can be recovered provided adoption takes place before age of 6mths at age attachment forms
