correlations- research methods Flashcards
types of correlation
negative correlation- as one variable rise the other one falls
positive correlation- both variables rise
difference between correlations and experiments
experiment- researcher controls or manipulates iv in order to measure effect on dv, one variable infer that the iv caused any observed changes in the dv
correlation-no manipulation of one variable, cant establish cause and effect relationship, just a relationship between two variables
correlation strength
useful preliminary tool for research
strength and direction of relationship, provide precise and quantifiable measure of how two varibles related or demonstrate pattern
used as starting point to assess possible patterns between variables before researchers commit to experimental study
relatively quick and economical to carry out
no need for controlled environment and no manipulation of variables required
data collected by others can be sued
less time consuming than experiments
correlation limitations
lack of experimental manipulation ad contol, can only tell use how variables related not why
cant demonsrate cause and effect between variables and dont know which variable causing the other to change
untested variable causing relationship between the two co variables- intervening variable
can be misused or misinterpreted
relationships presented as causal when they arent
