Animal husbandry
keeping, breeding and raising livestock domesticated for economic reasons in farms, stud farms and similar establishments; keeping pets domesticated for personal reasons
Types of animal production
collective farming, factory farming, intensive and extensive farming (indoors and outdoors), alternative farming, organic farming, vertical and others like fell farming
Specialised farms are
dairy, beef, poultry
Dairy farming
femaile cattle, goat or other mammals are raised for their milk, cheese and butter. Male calves are usually sold on for veal. Farms grow their own feed, store it for the winter
Poultry farming
raises chickens, turkeys, ducks for meat or eggs
Intensive production
Factory farming - intensive piggery, large scale chicken farms, dairy farms, feed lots; Confinement at high stocking density, use of antibiotics and pesticides to prevent spread of disease. High number of animals are held indoors. Try to produce high quantities of food at lowest cost possible; Debates of the welfare of animals being restricted, prevented from living naturally, often restricted from movement so they put on weight; BSE was caused by the unnatural feed given to animals to reduce costs
Feedlots
contain thousands of pens where animals are fattened and then sent to slaughter
Insensitive pig farming
pigs for slaughter are held in sheds and sows are kept in sow stalls where movement is restricted, she can’t turn around, only sit and lie down so she can’t roll over the piglets. Temperature is very important to control, can’t roll in mud
