Topic 40 Flashcards
Outcrossing
where two unrelated individuals have been crossed to produce progeny. Same breed but have no closer relationship than 4-6 generations. Most recommended for purebred breeders
Results of outcrossing
Increases genetic diversity; Also can increase the number of individuals that carry a recessive gene
Effective population size
Theoretical amount of individuals in a population that are able to give offspring (no elderly or immature); measured by counting
For theory of population
two copies of a gene will be sampled as the next generation is produced
Population size N
2N genes
bottleneck effect
when a population’s size is reduced for at least one generation. Because genetic drift acts more quickly to reduce genetic variation in small populations, undergoing a bottleneck can reduce a population’s genetic variation by a lot,
= some genes may dissapere, or gain a broader place in the population
