Topic 43 Flashcards
Reasons for breed endangerments
human civilization and culture; natural phenomenon during evolution; cosmic relations (dinosaurs); Dodo made extinct due to human factors (hunting; without enemies, they were friendly and shy); extreme international distribution of some breeds; 30% of mammalian and bird breeds are critically endangered
Grades and status
Extinct; critical breed; endangered breed; critical maintained/endangered maintained; breed at risk; breed not at risk
Extinct
no longer possible to recreate the population. No oocyte or semen to create embryo
Critical breed
total number of breeding females is less than 100 or number of breeding males less than 5. Overall population around 100 but decreasing
Endangered breed
total number of breeding females between is between 100 and 1000; total number of breeding males is less than 20; population around 1000 but decreasing
Critical maintained breed and endangered maintained breed
breeds that are being maintained by active public conservation program
Breed at risk
a breed that has not been classified as critical, critical maintained, endangered
Breed not at risk
number of breeding females greater than 1000; males greater than 20; pop size increasing
