Topic 30 Flashcards
Technology in animal production
It is the totality of all rules and tools and actions necessary for an economic animal production
Elements of technology
Genetics, care, economy
Genetics
Genetic improvement, preservation, recording data processing
Care
Plant and feed production, nutrition, animal health, reproduction, grooming, elements of housing (buildings, machines, equipments, and their operation)
Economy
organization of the work, wage system, marketing, calculations
Kind of places in production
Small holders farms, Large scale operations
Small holders farms
small area, limited input, production is enough for the own family, state support
Large scale operations
Large fields, great investments, insensitive, industrialised (mechanized) concentrated (high stock density) specialized, regular control, preventative treatments, maximized profit, with employees. Aim to produce most product at lower cost
Ecological production
Ecological farming involves the introduction of symbiotic species, where possible, to support the ecological sustainability of the farm.
Associated benefits to ecological production
reduction in ecological debt and elimination of dead zones
Ecological farming
It is a pioneering, practical development which aims to create globally sustainable land management systems and encourage review of the importance of maintaining biodiversity in food production and farming and products
Principles unique to ecological farming
Food production should be ecological in both origin and destiny; Integration of species that maintain ecosystem services whilst providing a selection of alternative products; Minimise food miles, packaging, energy consumption, and waste; Apply the value of a knowledge base about soil microorganisms so that discoveries of the ecological benefits of having various kinds of microorganisms such as Forest Gardens, e.g. naturally occurring microorganisms called dentrifiers
precicion farming
observing, measuring and responding to inter and intra-field variability in crops. The goal of precision agriculture research is to define a decision support system (DSS) for whole farm management with the goal of optimizing returns on inputs while preserving resources.
