In vitro conservation
refers to the conservation of an animal in an artificial environment, under cryogenic conditions including inter alia, he cryoconsercation of embryos, semen, oocytes, somatic cells or tissues having the potential to reconstitute live animals at a later date
How long can they be preserved for?
Decades and centuries
Semen methods of preservation
freezing; sufficient amount must be collected to produce the number of backcross genrerations required
Oocytes methods of preservation
hasn’t been successful in bird eggs; embryos from some mammalian livestock species can be produced in vitro from matured oocytes collected at slaughter or from live females by ovum pick up; can be frozen
Embryos preservation
embryos of all mammals can be frozen, thawed and transferred to recipient female; limited to cattle, sheep, goats; need to sacrifice the pig to get embryos; experimental in horses; the method of collection (biopsied, in vitro or cloned) and stage of maturation greatly affect the likelihood of having a successful pregnancy; allows full recovery of the genome
