Topic 13 Flashcards
Muscular hypertrophy
muscle enlargement
in cattle
Myostatin gene mutation: recessive or maternal imprinting
Cattle: chromosome nr 2
Callypige
larger rump
in sheep
Maternal genomic printing
Chromosome 18
double muscling
born with more muscle fibers leading to larger muscles
-> better meat, more tender
caused by callypige and muscular hypertrophy
- increased dystocia, reduced fertility, often in Belgian blue cattle
thermotolerance in cattle
slower growth, lower fertility and poor meat quality –> global warming!
Thermotolerance genes: HSP70 (heat shock protein)
Thermot. Cattle breeds: Braman, Senepol, Romosinuano
Stress sensitivity in swine:
PSS (porhine stress syndrome)
RYR1 (ryanoid receptor gene)
On 6th chromosome
Symptoms: seizure, tremors, heart stops
