Actions (Pharmacodynamics) - Thiamine
Combines with ATP to form thiamine pyrophosphate, a coenzyme necessary for carbohydrate metabolism. Thiamine is required by our bodies to properly use carbohydrates.
Indications - Thiamine
❑ Prior to D50W in hypoglycemic patients suspected of thiamine deficiency (malnutrition, alcoholism). May administer following if not given prior.
❑ Prevention of Wernicke’s encephalopathy.
❑ Delirium tremors
❑ Ethanol Poisoning
Dosage - Thiamine
100 mg SIVP/IM
Contraindications - Thiamine
Hypersensitivity to thiamine products (anaphylaxis can occur)
Precautions - Thiamine
❑ Hypotension may occur if given too quickly IV.
❑ Not recommended for pediatric
