- Hyperkalemia
- Calcium channel blocker OD (treats the hypotension/antidote)
- Ionized hypocalcemia (eg, after multiple blood transfusions)
- Magnesium sulfate toxicity (respiratory depression, hypotension)
Adult: Dosage for Calcium Chloride
Adult: 500 to 1000mg (of 10% solution) very SIVP. May be repeated q 5-10 minutes to total max 5g or 100mg/kg (whichever is less).
Contraindications for Calcium Chloride
- Hypercalcemia
- Digitalis toxicity
- Renal calculi
- Ventricular Fibrillation (except in the setting of suspected hyperkalemia)
Precautions for Calcium Chloride
DO NOT administer with Sodium Bicarbonate as precipitate will form.
- Not recommended for routine treatment in cardiac arrest outside of hyperkalemia, hypocalcemia or hypermagnesemia
- Higher doses may be required for calcium channel blocker overdoses
- Monitor ECG and BP
- Give slowly, stop if patient complains of discomfort
- Avoid extravasation and necrosis; Central venous administration is preferred if available
- After IV injection patient should be recumbent.
Pediatric: Dosage for Calcium Chloride 10%
