Dimenhydrinate Classification
Dimenhydrinate Classification is; Antiemetic, antivertigo and antihistamine
MOA (pharmacodynamics) for Dimenhydrinate
Dimenhydrinate is a histamine H1 and ACh receptor antagonist that acts as an antiemetic and antivertigo medication. Centrally blocking these receptors depresses the sensitivity of the labyrinth apparatus that normally relays stimuli to the CTZ and vomiting center of the brain.
Indications for Dimenhydrinate Admin
Dimenhydrinate is indicated for treatment of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness, vertigo, and narcotic administration.
Dosage for Dimenhydrinate
Dose for Dimenhydrinate:
Adults: 25-50 mg SIVP; diluted with NS to 10 ML; or 50-100 mg IM/PO, repeat every 4 hours
Peds: 1 mg/kg slow IM/IV/IO push. Max 25 mg q 4 hours
Contraindications for Dimenhydrinate (3)
- Hypersensitivity
- Any condition that may be worsened by anti-cholinergic effects
- Patients who have ingested a large amounts of depressants, including ET0H
Precautions when administering Dimenhydrinate
- Ensure the use of a z track method when giving IM to avoid subcutaneous irritation.
- Use cautiously in patients with seizures and acute narrow angle glaucoma.
Notable notes for Dimenhydrinate
Dimenhydrinate may cause children under the age of 6 to experience paradoxical hyper-excitability.
IV dose for children has not yet been established (yet there’s a peds dose above?).
Administer IM injections in the lateral quad (vastus lateralis)
