Calcium Gluconate 10% Flashcards
Generic name for Calcium Gluconate
Calcium Gluconate 10%
Trade name for Calcium Gluconate 10%
Calcium Gluconate
Classification for Calcium Gluconate
calcium supplement
MOA (Pharmacodynamics) for Calcium Gluconate
- Needed for maintenance of nervous, muscular, skeletal systems, enzyme reactions, normal cardiac contractility and blood coagulation.
- Affects secretory activity of endocrine and exocrine glands
Indications for Calcium Gluconate
- Hyperkalemia
- Calcium channel blocker OD (treats the hypotension/antidote)
- Ionized hypocalcemia (eg, after multiple blood transfusions)
- Magnesium sulfate toxicity (respiratory depression, hypotension)
Adult: Dosage for Calcium Gluconate
Adult: 1000 to 2000mg (10% solution), very SIVP/IO (tissue necrosis possible). Total max 4g.
Contraindications for Calcium Gluconate
- Hypercalcemia
- Digitalis toxicity
- Renal calculi
- Ventricular Fibrillation (except in the setting of suspected hyperkalemia)
Precautions for Calcium Gluconate
NOTE Calcium chloride is 3 times as potent as Calcium gluconate**
DO NOT administer with Sodium Bicarbonate as precipitate will form
Not recommended for routine treatment in cardiac arrest outside of hyperkalemia, hypocalcemia or hypermagnesemia
- Higher doses may be required for calcium channel blocker overdoses
- Monitor ECG and BP
- Give slowly, stop if patient complains of discomfort
- Peripheral venous administration is preferred.
- After IV injection patient should be recumbent
Pediatric: Dosage for Calcium Gluconate 10%
Pediatric: 5 - 7 mg/kg IV/IO (10% solution) to a single max 1000mg, q 5-10 min. Total max 3g.
