Q

MOA (pharmacodynamics) of Pantoprazole

A
  • Binds to the ATP pump in the basal gastric cell to prevent it from pumping protons (H+ ions) that will increase gastric acidity.
  • Therapeutic effects: diminished accumulation of acid in the gastric lumen, with lessened acid reflux. Decreased acid secretion in hyper-secretory conditions

Q

Why are proton pump inhibitors (PPI’s), like Pantoprazole, indicated as first line therapy for upper/lower GI bleeds, erosive esophagitis, and GERD?

A

Because gastric acid can be a contributing factor to these conditions and PPI’s help reduce gastric acidity.
