A

Anticonvulsant: stabilizes neuronal membranes and limits seizure activity by either increasing efflux or decreasing influx of sodium ions across cell membranes in the motor cortex during generation of nerve impulses.

Seizures: 15-20 mg/kg IV infusion dilute to a maximum concentration of 10mg/ml (*do not exceed 50 mg/min.)

❑ High grade heart block ex. 2nd and 3rd, Adam Stokes Syndrome

❑ If patient takes phenytoin daily, blood levels should be determined before administration.
❑ Benzodiazepines, amiodorone and allopurinol increase phenytoin effects.
