How is oral glucose supplied?
25g/tube
Actions (Pharmacodynamics) - Oral glucose
A monosaccharide that is given orally and is readily absorbed in the intestine.
Indications - Oral glucose
Hypoglycemia in patients who are alert, are able to follow commands & can swallow
Dosage - Oral glucose
Adult/Pediatric – 25 g orally (may repeat in 5 minutes if necessary); to a maximum of 50 g (Administer the entire contents of tube (25g) slowly and intermittently while patient swallows).
Contraindications - Oral glucose
❑ Any patient who is not alert
❑ Any patient unable to follow commands
❑ Any patient who lacks a gag reflex
Precautions - Oral glucose
May cause nausea or the patient may gag when administered
Does oral glucose absorb sublingually or buccally?
NO
After the hypoglycemia is corrected with administration of oral glucose, what must be given next?
Other carbohydrates must be given to prevent relapse after hypoglycemia is corrected. I.E Make your patient a peanut butter sandwich.
When is the maximal clinical effect of oral glucose?
The maximal clinical effect is 50 min
