Structure and Function of Systems Flashcards
Tissues
Groups of similar cells that work together to perform a common functions
Epithelial Cells
Shape based (squamous, cuboidal, columnar…etc)
Layer based (simple, stratified, pseudostratified)
Nervous Tissue
Neurons, glial cells
Connective Tissue
Loose, dense, fibrous cartilage, bone, blood, adipose
Muscle
Smooth, striated, cardiac
Organs
Groups of tissues functioning together
What is Special About the Heart
Organ that contains all 4 tissues that work together
Integrator
Control center, usually brain
Can activate a second mechanism (effector)
Evaluates conditions detected by receptor
Ectotherms
Obtain body heat from environment
Includes invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, fish
Also called poikilotherms, cold blooded
Endotherms
Generate own body heat
Also called homeotherms, warm blooded
Cooling by Evaporation
Sweat (liquid) evaporates (gas)
Endergonic reaction (requires heat)
Includes evaporation out of the respiratory system (like when dogs pant)
Warming by Metabolism
Metabolic activities generate heat
i..e Contracting muscles (why we shiver when cold)
Adjusting Surface Area
Extremities add surface area to body
Body can adjust amount of blood flow to certain areas of the body to warm or cool us using vasodilation or vasoconstriction
i..e Reduced blood flow to hands when its cold
Thermoregulation in Elephants
In hot climates, increased blood flow to large ears, allowing their body to remain cool
