Kingdom Fungi Flashcards
Kingdom Fungi
Grow via hyphae filaments, which form a mass (mycelium)
Some have septa that divide filament into compartments that contain a single nucleus
Either parasites or saprobes (absorb breakdown products from digestive enzymes they secrete)
Cell Wall
Made of chitin (sugar)
Haustoria
Many parasitic fungi have hyphae called haustoria that penetrates their host
Sexual Reproduction of Fungi
Are normally haploid, but become diploid to reproduce
Plasmogamy
2 fungi cells fuse to produce a single cell with nuclei from both strains
Dikaryon
Pair of haploid nuclei from 2 fungi fusing cells
Karyogamy
2 haploid nuclei in a dikaryon fuse to form a diploid
Meiosis then occurs to produce a haploid
Asexual Reproduction in Fungi
Fragmentation- hyphae break up
Budding- Pinching off of an outgrowth of hyphae
Asexual Spores
Asexual Spores
Spores produced in saclike capsule called sporangia
Sporangia are each borne on a stalk called a sporangiophore
Conidia
Formed at the tips of specialized hyphae
Not enclosed inside sacs
Hyphae bearing conidia are conidiophores
Fungus Type
Zygomycota
Glomeromycota
Asomycota
Basidiomycota
Deuteromycota
Lichens
Zygomycota
Lack septa
Reproduce sexually (zygospores)
i..e Bread mold
Glomeromycota
Lack septa
No zygospores
Mutualistic relationships in plant roots called mycorrhizae
Ascomycota
Contain septa
Reproduce sexually (ascospores)
Yeasts
Basidiomycota
Contain septa Produce sexually (basidiospores)
