Q

Menstrual Phase

A

Endometrium shed from uterus

Increased estrogen/progesterone stimulate hypothalamus to stop producing FSH and LH

Q

Menstrual Cycle- Hypothalamus

A

Hypothalamus monitros estrogen/progesterone blood levels

When low, secretes GnRH (Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH)

Stimulates ant. pit.

Q

Menstrual Cycle- Ant. Pit

A

In response to GnRH, releases FSH and LH
Causes development of follicle and oocyte

FSH causes follicle to secrete estrogen, endometrium thickens
(Proliferative phase)

Q

LH surge

A

Blood estrogen rises, due to FSH

hypothalamus releases GnRH to trigger large LH release by ant. pit

LH surge in blood triggers ovulation

Q

Corpus Luteum

A

Following ovulation, follicle is now empty of a oocyte

Corpus luteum continues to develop and secretes estrogen and progesterone to prepare the uterus for implantation

Endometrium of uterus begins to thicken with nutrients and blood vessels in response to progesterone and estrogen (secretory phase)

Q

HCG

A

Human Chorionoic Gonadotropin

Released by fertilized egg if it implants to endometrium

Sustains corpus luteum (continued production of progesterone and estrogen)
