When is a vessel considered safely manned
When a vessel has sufficient officer and ratings with appropriate skills to ensure that they can:
- Maintain a safe navigational, engineering, radio watch.
- Moor and unmoored the ship safely
- Manage the safety function when employed in a stationary mode at sea
- Perform operations for the prevention of damage to the environment
- Maintain the safety arrangements and cleanliness to minimise the risk of fire
- provide for medical car onboard
- Ensure safe carriage of cargo
- Inspect and maintain the structural integrity of the ship.
- Operate all water tight closing arrangements and to deploy a competent damage control.
- Operate and maintain all on-board fire fighting, emergency equipment and Life saving appliances
- Operate the main propulsion and auxiliary machinery and maintain in a safe condition.
What are the Certificates required by all crew
- STCW: PST, PSSR, FIRE, FIRST AID, SECURITY AWARENESS
- ENG1
- Passport
- Seaman’s Discharge
- SEA/crew agreement
Additionally:
- Ships cook
- Deck rating
- CoC/CeC (Deck and Eng)
What type of medical certificates are required
ENG1(seagoing vessel) or ML5(non seagoing vessel, river boats)
Or equivalent accepted by the UK (mgn 1815)
Certification for Chef
Ships cook certificate
- 18 year or older
- 1 month sea service
- Ships cook certificate part 1 and 2
- Health and safety in catering in maritime industry
- STCW basic
- ENG 1
New OOW from different country what is required
CoC from country, apply for Flag state endorsements through MCA,
Will be issued with Certificate of received application (valid for 6 months)
ENG 1 out of date how long valid and what to do if needing to depart
ENG 1 valid for 3months, COntact flag and have examination undertaken at first opportunity.
Crew lost his STCW certs (basic and CoC’s), need to leave port what to do.
All originals must be onboard, vessel cannot Leave with out the certificates.
