What is the Red Ensign Yacht code?
The large commercial yacht code allows luxury yachts to operate under an alternate set of rules.
The code incorporates applicable sections form STCW, SOLAS,LOAD LINES AND MARPOL. LY3 ensures yachts are built and operated to a high standard of safety and compliance with the rules and is recognized worldwide.
It applies to yachts over 24m and carrying no more than 12 passengers

Pleasure vessel
Trainees
Passenger ship - Any vessel which carries more than 12 passengers.
Pleasure vessel - In the case of a vessel owned solely by an individual which at the time of use is being used for sport and pleasure by the owner and immediate family or friends and if on voyage or excursion the owner does not receive money other than that which would cover direct expenses of the operation of the vessel.

In the case of a vessels owned by a body corporate then at the time of use is for sport and pleasure and used by employees, officers and there immediate family and if on voyage or excursion the body corporate does not receive money other than that which would cover direct expenses of the operation of the vessel.
Trainees - whose sole purpose is working on a ship to receive training. Trainees are regarded as seafarers but are generally not included on the safe manning document.
