What is the Red ensign group?

A

The red ensign group is made up of vessels which fly the red ensign. This include;

  • UK
  • Crown dependencies (Isle of man, Guernsey and jersey)
  • British overseas territories (Cayman, Turks and Caicos, Bermuda, Anguilla, BVI’s, Gibraltar…) which have ships registers.

A vessels registered with in the red ensign group is classified and British ships.

What is the MAIB

A

Independent branch under the Department of transport which are responsible for investigation and developing reports on marine accidents. The intention of the reports are to promote safety and reduce accidents.
They investigate accidents that involve UK resgistered ships through out the world and and all marine accidents in UK waters.

A

Event that results in:

  • Death or serious injury
  • Loss of a person from a ship
  • Loss or presumed loss of a ship
  • Material damage to a ship
  • Ship being unfit to proceed to sea required flag approval or condition of class to proceed
  • Breakdown of a ship at sea
  • Stranding or collision
  • Pollution

What is a marine incident

A

Any event resulting from the operation of the ship which is not serious enough to be deemed a casualty but if not corrected has. A likely hood of doing so. Examples:

  • Close quarters situation where urgent action was required
  • Any event that had potential for serious injury
  • Fire that did not result in damage
  • Unintended temporary grounding where there was no damage
  • MOB where recovered with out injury
