What is the weekly notice to Mariners

A

Weekly notice to Mariners is released weekly by the uk hydrographic office. It contains updates to all UKHO publications (charts and books). It can be obtained via the UKHO website or through an approved admiralty dealer.

The last notice of every month contains all temp and prelim notices

Every quarter contains latest edition of publications

What are the sections of the weekly notice

A

1 explanatory notes and list

  1. List of charts this WN effects, latest editions, charts to be withdrawn and charts coming into force.
    1a. Released monthly, contains list of t and p that are cancelled and still in effect
    1b. Quarterly, list of current editions of publications
2 charts, end of section has t and p
3 Navarea 1 NAV warnings
4 sailing directions
5 lights and fog signals
6 ALRS
7 publications
8 digital

What are temp notices

A

A temp notice is issued when a correction to a publication will only be valid for a brief period. I.e. An unexplored ordinary in a position.

Temp corrections should be made in pencil.

What are prelim notices

A

Are preliminary notice is issued when a correction is about to be made permanent but finalization of the details are in progress.

Must be made in pencil

I.e. New lights being installed at a newly built breakwater.

When are t and p issued

A

Every week at the end of section 2 and then a comprehensive list is issued at the end of every month. Then in volume 1 section 2 of the annual notice to Mariners a comprehensive list of all T’s and P’s still valid for that year are released.

What are cumulative notices

A

They are issued every 6 months ( Jan , June )
Contains lists of all chart correction reference numbers, current chart edition and chart number.

Does not contain actual chart correction

Carriage of NTM

A

Weekly, must be contained until next annual summary

Cumulative carried until follow up cumulative

Annual notice regarding publications should be kept for the entirety of the publication that was corrected until new addition is released

What is an Annual notice to Mariners

A

They are release every January in two parts

Volume 1 is in 2 section
Volume 2 is in 4 section

V1.1 contains notices that cover important information that may stay valid for a long time, eventually this info moves to other publications

What is in Part 1 of annual summary

A

Section 1. (1-26) annual notice to Mariners that contain important topics that may remain valid for an extended period of time. If a topic remains long enough it will be moved to an appropriate publication.

Section 2. All T and P notices still in force at the start of that year

Find NP number

Check edition

Check corrections

Then check every subsequent weekly notice.
