What are the fire fighting appliance requirements for a vessel over 500gt<3000gt
- 2 Jets of water to reach any part of the vessel.
- Fixed fire suppression system in machinery space
- Suitable number of Extinguisher, as least one readily available in the accommodation space not less than 5. Vessel over 1000gt
- INternational shore connection
- 2 BA sets
- PAint and flammable liquid locker, approved protection system.

What does F,I,R,E stand for
F - Find
I - Inform
R - Restrict
E - Extinguish or escape
Classifications of types of fire
Class A - Solids of organic nature
Class B - Flammable liquids
Class C - Gas fires
Class D - Metals, powdered metals
Class F(British)/K(US) - Fats/Kitchen, Cooking Oils
Electrical Fires - (class E) but not really a class. Once electricity has been isolated fire becomes a class abcd.
Types of extinguisher and where they are applicable.
Foam - Type A, B fires. Smothering and cooling, Forms a blanket over water and oils due to low specific gravity. Not to be used in situations where electricity is of concern until completely isolated.
Dry Powder (ABC powder)- Type A, B, C Fires. There are types of powders that can be used on class D. Inhibits chemical reaction, Smothers to a point, does not cool. May damage electrical equipment.
Co2 - Type A, B, C, D and electrical. Will only be effective in confined spaces as Co2 disperses easily. Does not cool and there fore will not prevent re-ignition.
Water - not common onboard a vessel
Wet chemical - Type F/K. Cooking oil fats. Turns the oil into a soapy substance.
EEBD requirements
In accommodation space: At least 2 per main vertical zone.
In machinery spaces: The amount shall be determined by the size of the space and then amount of people working in it.
Additionally: at least 1 spare onboard.
Initial actions on response to a FIRE
Person who finds:
- Inform/raise the alarm
- attack fire immediately
- Leave compartment marketing sure isolated
OOW:
- Raise Alarm/ Muster
- Fire doors and
- Call Master
- Shut dampers/ventilation
- Slow
- Chart assessment and Position
Master:
- Take Con
- Casualties/missing people
- Fire pumps, Bilge Pumps, Emergency generators, Emergency fire pump.
- Fire fighting activities
- Boundary cooling
- Electrical and fuel shut offs
- Suppression system activation
- GMDSS
- Emergency services
- Stability
- Vessel manoeuvring (orientation to the wind, Safe haven, Anchor)

LOG BOOK
FFE inspections Monthly
Monthly:
- BA gear
- Extinguishers in position, good condition
- Hydrants hoses and nozzles in place and serviceable.
- Escape routes
- PA and alarms
- Fixed FFE valves in correct operational position, gauges in proper ranges, Cylanders full. Test auto start function.
- Fire pumps and E-pump (fuel level)
- Sample of detectors and call points
FFE quarterly inspections
Quarterly:
- Extinguisher at correct pressure, service date
- INternational shot connection is serviceable
- FFE Locker has full inventory
- Fire door, dampers and ventilation operate locally
FFE Annual inspections
Annual:
- Extinguishers annual inspection and recharge
- Hoses pressure tested
- All hydrants valves operation
- Fire door and dampers operate remotely
- Galley exhausts/ducts Free from grease build up
- All Fixed suppression systems operate correctly. Manufacturer inspection and service
- Fire pumps, flow rate and pressure tests, relief valves
- Filters/strainers
- Fixed fire detection system, detectors visually inspected, operate according to manufacturer specs
- BA sets inspection and service, Cylanders visual inspection
- EEBD, Annual service
FFE weekly inspection
Equipment must be check to ensure ready for immediate use.
- Fire detection system, Alarms, lamp indicators with switch
- Fire doors and damper indicators on panel test button
- PA system
- BA sets correct operating pressure
- Water mist control panel indicators, visually inspect pump units, valve positions
FFE 2 year inspection
- Fixed co2, weighed contents verified, 95% nominal charge
- Blow dry compressed air through nitrogen discharge lines to ensure no blockages
FFE 5year
- CO2 intrerna; inspection of control valve
- Water mist Perform internal inspection of valves, batteries
- Hydrostatic test of BA cylanders
- Low level light, luminance test
FFE 10 year
- Fixed Gas (co2) hydrostatic test of 10% of total, if one or more fail then 50 percent must be tested, if further failure then all to be tested
- Flexible hoses replaced
- Highfog, Hydrostatic
