States of Consciousness 4 Flashcards
continuum of consciousness
controlled processes automatic processes daydreaming altered states sleep and dreaming procedural memory unconsciousness
controlled processes
aka selective attention
actively focusing on something
10-20 minutes
can’t multitask
automatic processes
everything in background
daydreaming
everybody does it, useful, creative, divergent thinking, always about the future
rest (consolidation)
procedural memory
things you know how to do
unconscious/implicit memory
circadian rhythms
24 hour cycle
guided by biology and environment (sun and light make a difference), temperature, genetics, hormones
people in nature shift to a 25 hour cycle (but debated)
sleep purposes
repair, restoration, memory, learning
adaptive/evolutionary perspective of sleep
sleep to keep self safe from predators/night dangers, preserve energy, but problem = at most vulnerable when asleep
restore and repair theory of sleep
physically feel better, synaptic pruning
learning/memory theory of sleep
consolidate memories when sleep, sleeping = learning
REM sleep
20%, everything increasing similar to being awake aka paradoxical sleep/aserinsky sleep cataplexy (can't move major muscles) dreams 90 minute cycles heightened brain activity and breathing
NREM sleep
80%
everything decreasing
stage one of sleep
wake to sleep, 1-7 minutes, theta waves, don’t think asleep, somewhat aware of surroundings
stage 2 of sleep
begin sleep, body slows down, harder to be awakened
stage 3 of sleep
slow down more, delta waves, brief
stage 4 of sleep
deep sleep, secrete growth hormone, brain development, hard to wake up
hypnagogic
state right before sleep
hypnagogic jerk = jerk when falling asleep
physical dependency on drug
changes in brain and synapses, withdrawal symptoms
psychological dependency on drug
feel wrong without it, think need it to be happy, addicted to routine of drug
CAGE dependence/addiction
c = cut back (if think need to)
a = annoyance/anger (at/from people around you)
g = guilt (about using it)
e = eye-opener (first thing think about when wake up)
if yes to one then dependece issue
abuse
use drug illegally or legal drug in bad way (overuse, someone else’s)
tolerance
need more of drug to get high, body has changed
hypnosis
person suggests that person will experience change in sensations, perceptions, thoughts, feelings, bx
can’t be hypnotized against will
some people more susceptible than others, about 1/3 each
hypnosis ego-syntonic vs ego-dystonic
syntonic = think hypnosis will work, willing to try it, works better dystonic = opposite
