What are the 3 statuses?
- Ascribed - given involuntary, based on race, ethnicity, gender, and family background
- Achieved - status gained as a result of one’s efforts or choices
- Master - a status by which a person most identified
What is a role?
a set of beliefs, values, and norms that define the expectations of a certain status in a social situation
What is role performance?
carrying out the behaviors of a given role
What is a role partner?
another individual who helps define the specific role within the relationship
What does a role set contain?
all the difference roles associated with a status
When does a role conflict occur?
when one has difficulty in satisfying the requirements of multiple roles simultaneously. this can lead to role strain in which one has difficulty satisfying multiple requirements from the same role simutaneloy
What is a peer group?
a self-selected group formed around similar interest, ages and statuses
what is a family group?
a group in which an indivudal is born, adopted or married into
What is in-group vs. out-group?
in-group is one that an individual identifies. the outgroup is one that an individual competes with or opposed
What is the diff b/w out and reference group?
a reference is a group to which an individual compares themselves. outgroup is one that an individual competes with or opposed
What is the diff b/w primary and secondary groups?
primary groups are those that contain a strong emotional bond, while secondary groups are often temporary and contain fewer emotional and weaker bonds overall
What is Gemeinschaften?
a community group unified by feelings of togetherness due to shared beliefs, ancestry or geography
What is Gesellschaft?
a societal group unified by mutual self-interest in achieving a goal such as country or company
What is a network?
an observable pattern of social relationships b/w individuals or groups
What is an organization?
bodies of people with a structure and culture designed to achieve a specific goal. they exist outside of each membership within organization
What is the diff b/w immediate and distance networks?
immediate networks may be composed of friends, whereas distant networks may include aquanted
What is the System for Multiple Lebel of Observation of Groups (SYMLOG)?
the belief that there are 3 fundamental dimensions of interactions: dominance vs. submission, friendliness vs. unfriendliness, and instrumentally controlled vs. emotionally expressive
What is self-presentation/impression management?
the process of displaying oneself to society through culturally accepted behavior
What is Darwin’s basic model of emotional expression?
emotional expression involves a number of components: facial expression, behavior, postures, vocal changes, and physiological changes, and are consistent with his theory of evolution, and should be similar across cultures
What is the appraisal model of emotional expression?
it states that they are biologically predetermined expressions once an emotion is experienced but that there is a cognitive antecedent to emotional expression
What is the social construction model of emotional expression?
assumes there is no biological basis for emotion, instead, emotions are based on experiences and situational context alone
What does culture syndrome influence?
the rules of expressing or suppressing emotions, and even influence the ways emotions are experienced
What is the authentic self?
who you are, both positive and negative
What is the ideal self?
who we would like to be under optimal conditions
What is the tactical self?
who we market ourselves to be when with others
What is the diff b/w Goffman’s front stage and backstage self?
front stage - where the actor is in front of the audience and performs to preserve their desired image
backstage - where the actor is not in front of an audience and is free to act outside of their desired image
What is the diff between the I and Me of George Mead’s Dramaturgical approach?
the me is the part of the self that is a response to the enviroments, whereas the I is the creative expression of the individual
What are the 6 marks of a bureaucracy?
- paid officials on a fixed salary
- nonelected officials who are provided the rights and privileges as a result of making a career out of holding office
- regular salary increases, seniority rights, and promotions upon passing an exam or milestones
- officials who entered the organization by holding advanced degrees or training
- responsibilities, obligations, privileges, and work procedures rigidly defined by the organization
