ORGO Ch. 3 Bonding Flashcards
What are single bonds?
sigma bonds which contain 2 electrons
What are double bonds?
contain 1 sigma and 1 pi bond
How are pi bonds created?
by the sharing of electrons b/w 2 unhybridized p-orbitals aligned side by side
What are triple bonds?
1 sigma and 2 pi bonds
What is the diff between multiple and single bonds?
multiple bonds are shorter and stronger due to pi bond
What is sp3 hybridized geometry?
they form tetrahedral geometry with 109.5-degree angles
What is sp2 hybridized geometry?
they form trigonal planar geometry with 120-degree angles
What is sp hybridized geometry?
they form linear geometry with 180-degree angles
Which carbon bonds formed sp3 hybridization?
single bonds
Which carbon bonds formed sp hybridization?
carbons with triple bonds or 2 double bonds
Which carbon bonds formed sp2 hybridization?
carbons with 1 double bond
