Chem Chp. 3 Bonding & Chemical Interactions Flashcards
What is the diff b/w polar and nonpolar covalent bonds?
in nonpolar covalent bonding, electrons are shared equally, while in polar covalent bonds, electrons aren’t shared equally
What is the diff between ionic and covalent bonds?
ionic bonding is the transfer of electrons from an atom with low to high ionization energy, while covalent bonds are the sharing of electrons between atoms with similar electronegativities
Which elements always abide by the octet rule?
Carbon, nitorgen, oxyent, fluorine, sodium and magensium
What are the qualities of ionic compounds?
very high MP and BP, dissolve readily in polar solvents, are great conductors of electricity in aqueous states, and form crystalline lattices in solid states
What are the qualities of covalent compounds?
lower MP and BP, poor conductors of electricity in solid or liquid states
What is the relationship between the number of covalent bonds?
single bonds are the longest and weakest, and triple bonds are the shortest and strongest
What are the 7 diatomic molecules?
H2, N2, 02, F2, Cl2, Br2, I2
What are the electronegativities between polar, covalent, and ionic bonds?
nonpolar - 0 to 0.5
polar - 0.5 to 1.7
ionic - 1.7>
What is the electron configuration of 2 atoms?
linear, with 180 degrees between electrons
What is the electron configuration of 3 atoms?
trigonal planar, 120 degrees between electrons
What is the electron configuration of 4 atoms?
tetrahedral, 109.5 degrees between electrons
What is the electron configuration of 5 atoms?
trigonal bipyramidal, 90, 120, and 180 degrees between electrons
What is the electron configuration of 6 atoms?
octahedral, 90 and 180 degrees between electrons
Order the intermolecular forces from weakest to strongest
London dispersion, dipole-dipole, hydrogen bonding, covalent bonds
Which molecules do hydrogen bonds exist?
Fluorine, oxygen, and nitrogen
