Chem Chp. 6 Equilibrium Flashcards
What happens when Q < Keq?
the forward reaction has not yet reached equilibrium
there is a greater concentration of reactants than at equilibrium; change in G < 0
What happens when Q = Keq?
the reactant and products are present at equilibrium, and the forward and reverse reactions are equal; change in G = 0
What happens when Q > Keq?
the forward reaction has exceeded equilibrium, there is a greater concentration of products than reactants; change in G > 0
What happens if Keq = 1?
the products and reactants are both at equilibrium
What happens if Keq < 1?
the reactants are present in greater concentration at equilibrium
What happens if Keq > 1?
the products are present at a greater concentration at equilibrium
What happens to a chemical system when you increase the [reactants] or [products]?
This will shift the reactions to the right, and vice versa
What happens to a gaseous system when the pressure is increased?
This will sift the reaction toward the side with fewer moles of gas, and vice versa
What happens to an endothermic system when temperature increases?
This will shift the reaction to the right and vice versa
What happens to an exothermic system when temperature increases?
This will shift the reaction to the left and vice versa
