BIOCHEM Chp.5 Lipids Flashcards

1
Q

What are the diff b/w saturated and unsaturated FA?

A

Saturated - only have single bonds, have greater van der Waals forces, and therefore more structural and stable, solid at room temp
unsaturated - 1 or more double bonds which introduce kinks in the chain, and make it difficult to solidify, liquid at room temp

Q

What is the role of cholesterol in the cell membrane?

A

it regulates membrane fluidity - at low temps, it keeps the membrane from solidifying, and at high temps, it hold the membrane intact and prevents it from becoming too permeable

Q

What is the role of Vit. D/cholecalciferol?

A

metabolized yo calcitriol in the kidneys and regulates calcium and phosphorus homeostasis in the intestines to increase their absorption, promoting bone formation

16
Q

What is the role of Vit. E/tocopherols?

A

acts as a biological antioxidant - their aromatic rings destroy free radicals, preventing oxidative damage

17
Q

What is the role of Vit. K/Phylloquinone and menaquiones?

A

important for the formation of prothrombin, a clotting factor. it also performs posttranslational modifications on several proteins, creating calcium-binding sites

18
Q

What are adipocytes?

A

large triacylglycerols deposits

19
Q

What is saponificationn?

A

the ester hydrolysis of triacylglycerols using a strong base like sodium or potassium hydroxide

20
Q

What is the role of soaps?

A

they act as surfactants, forming micelles that can dissolve liquid soluble molecules in their FA core, and wash away water because of their shell of carboxylate head groups

21
Q

What are triglycerols composed of?

A

a glycerol backbone esterified to 3 FA. used as energy storage
