Q3 Station 1 axial skeleton Flashcards
what are the eight bones in the cranium?
frontal Ethmoid Sphenoid temporal (left and right) parietal (left and right)
what does the Occipital condyle articulate with?
first cervical vertebrate
the foramen magnum connects what?
connects the cranial and spinal cavity
The spinal cavity is enclosed by what?
the vertebral column
the coronal suture lies in which body plane?
frontal (coronal)
frontal bone forms what?
the forehead and the roof of the orbits
what does the frontal bone contains what?
the frontal sinuses
What are above the supraorbital margins?
thickend ridges which support the eyebrows which are anatomically termed the superciliary arches
what two pieces for the zygomatic arch?
the zygomatic process of the temporal bone and the temporal process of the zygomatic bone
what is the external acoustic meatus?
where sound enters the ear
sphenoid bone is considered the “keystone” of the cranium. why?
beacuse it is hidden and articulates with frontal, occipital, ethmoid, and temporal bones
what passes through optic canal?
optic nerve
what sits in the sella turcica?
the pituitary gland
pterygoid processes of the sphenoid bone. What attaches to this?
attachment muscles that move the lower jaw
Ethmoid bone
what is the Crista galli?
an attachment site for the fibous membrane of the brain; it aids in securing the brain within the cranial cavity
Ethmoid bone
what are the cribriform plates? what do they do?
help make up the roof of the nasal cavity
the tiny holes have the olfactory nerves pass through
perpendicular plate extends where?
extends inferiorly along the midline of the ethmoid.
what does the perpendicular plate form?
the nasal septum along with part of the vomer bone and some hyaline cartilage. specifically, the bony nasal septum consists of the perpendicular plate superiorly, the comer vomer inferiorly and hyaline cartilage anteriorly
what is the function of the superior and inferior conchae?
mucous secretions from these air cells flush surface of nasal cavities
zygomatic bones from the zygomatic arch with what?
with zygomatic process of the temporal bone
mandible contains the submandibular fossa- what is in this fossa?
submandibular salivary glands
Hyoid bone
what is unique about this bone?
it is not in direct contact with any other bones
What is the hyoid bones function?
serves as a base for several muscles and ligaments concerned with movement of the tongue and larynx
