Day 7- Bone Tissue Flashcards
osteoblasts are
immature, bone forming
osteocytes are
mature bone cells
osteoclasts are
break down bone (remodelling - remove matrix and release calcium)
osteoprogenitor cells
stem cells that produce osteoblasts
Matrix of bone is called
osteoid
matrix is?
mineralized ground substance plus collagen and elastin
Compact bone - structure and where?
densely packed matrix, highly organized vascular structure, forms walls of diaphysis in long bones and covers epiphyses
Spongy bone - also called? and structure and where?
Trabecular
- very vascular
- red marrow found here
- insides of bones
lacuna? what is in them
pockets for cells- hold osteocytes
lamellae?
concentric rings of cells
canaliculi?
little canals- interconnect lacunae allowing connections between cells
Periosteum - what, layers, fibres are continuous with what?
surrounds bone
outer layer- fibrous
inner layer- cellular
fibres are continuous with bone, adjacent joint capsules, ligaments and tendons
Ossification - endochondral
hyaline cartilage acts as a model for bone. within the matrix of cartilage, chondrocytes enlarge and calcify, blood vessels start growing in, fibroblasts turn into osteoblasts, and begin making spongy bone.
Primary and secondary ossification centres are?
primary - in middle of to be diaphysis, secondary - in muddle os to be epiphyses
epiphyseal growth plate is?
epiphyseal cartilage remaining between primary and secondary ossification centres.
