hormones Flashcards

Q

3 ways hypothalamus controls hormone release

A

1) Direct nervous system control of the the adrenal medulla. Release of NOR and EPI
2) Creates ADH and Oxytocin, transports them to posterior pituitary via nerves where they are released to the Body
3) releases controlling hormones to anterior pituitary to direct it what to release

Q

Anterior Pituitary Hormones and what they effect/cause

A

LH - ovaries and testes, cause ovulation (release of progesterone) and spermatogenesis
FSH - ovaries and semiferous tubules - estrogen and testosterone release
PRL - stimulate mammary gland development and release of milk
TSH - stimulates release of thyroid hormones from the thyroid
ACTH - release of cortisol from adrenal cortex
GH - cell growth and division

Q

Thyroid gland cells and what they release

A

Follicular cells : T3 and T4 = increase metabolism

Parafollicular cells : release calcitonin = storage of calcium

Q

Adrenal Cortex hormones, what they do and where they are released from:

A

Glomerulosa (most superficial) : Aldosterone = blood mineral control on kidneys
Fasciculata (middle): Cortisol = long term stress (inflammtaory, increase blood glucose, etc.)
Retcularis (most deep): Testosterone

Q

Pancreatic Hormones: what cells and what they release

A

Islets and Langerhans
Alpha cell: Glucagon = increase BG
