Q3 station 2 vertebral column Flashcards
what passes through the intervertebral foramina?
nerves
vertebral canal is made up of what?
a whole series of individual vertebral foramina
what lies in the vertebral canal?
the spinal cord
cervical vertebrae how many are there?
c1- c7
what stucture of the superior surface do the cervical vertebrae articulate with?
the occipital condyles of the skull
odontoid process of dens. what is its function?
it forms a pivot for rotation and permits the side to side turning of the head at the articulation of C1 and C2
thoracic vertebrae
how many are there?
T1- T 12
what do the superior and inferior costal facets articulate with?
T1- T8 articulate with 2 pairs of ribs
T9- T12 have only a single costal facet on each side
Transverse coastal facet on the transverse process articulates with what?
tubercles of ribs
what is the movement allowed here at the thoracic region?
rotation and because of the ribs, somewhat limited flexion, extension, and lateral flexion
Lumbar vertebrae
how many?
L1-L5
What movements are allowed in the lumbar ?
flexion, extension, lateral flexion and extremely limitied rotation
What is the Sacrum made of?
5 fused vertebrae
What passes through the sacral foramina?
nerves and vessels pass through here
auricular surface. what does this articulate with?
with sacrum to form sacroiliac joint
